As an event planner at Bear Creek Mountain Resort, I have a grueling and demanding position….my life is not all games, music, festivals and wine… oh wait it is!!!! The Special Events department at Bear Creek is tasked with creating exciting events both on the large scale think Spring Wine Festival or Oktoberfest and on the smaller scale like our Valentines Lift of Love and Dog Dayz of Summer. Having access to a wonderful executive chef, Michael Greenstein, and our beautiful restaurant, The Grillle, we decided to put together an intimate Wine Dinner that incorporates wine education, tantalizing foods and place it all in our beautiful base area as it begins to explode with fall colors.
For the September 19th Spanish Wine & Tapas Dinner we began our brainstorming with our executive Chef and gave him the objective of coming up with some delightful tapas dishes that would use the regional foods of Spain for his plate inspirations. Chef Michael loves to try new and exciting flavors and he came back with an intriguing menu that has everything from olives and anchovies, to octopus and manchego stuffed dates, wow! Once we had our menu created it was now time to find the perfect wines to pair with each course. Enter our wine expert Terry Balent from Southern Wine and Spirits. Terry has over 30 years of experience in the industry and is such a wealth of information as well as a fun guy. We presented Terry with our menu and he began to pull wines for us to taste.
Here is where my job becomes grueling, a select team of event planners, marketing and restaurant staff sit down with Terry and get an intensive education on the regional wines of Spain. Terry had several wines on his suggested list for us to sample. Spending time with Terry is like a master’s class in wine, way more than I can take in, but I love to listen to him describe the grapes (Tempranillo is the most widely planted grape in Spain), to joking about the Paco Y Lola label (they are the most common names in Spain like John and Mary is here), to his explanation about the differences between American and European barrels (machine cut vs hand sawn, who knew!). From these wines we then decide which wines will go best with each course and what wines that we think the guest would enjoy tasting as well as learning about. Our goal is to create a well-rounded night and to give each guest a wealth of taste sensations as well as knowledge that will help them understand the wine flavor notes, why it goes well with each food and how to recapture the enjoyment with their own wine choices.
I have to say that I was very impressed with the wines of Spain and can’t wait for our guests’ to have the full experience of tasting the wines with the foods and to compare each tapas with the different wines. The fact that Terry will be there as a guide for the night will leave everyone with plenty of information and a night spent relaxing and enjoying life to its fullest. Have you ever stopped to think about the meaning behind the Labor Day holiday? Embarrassingly, I must admit that I hadn’t really given it much thought. So today, while pondering what to write about, I realized that the Labor Day holiday is soon approaching. Thanks to my good friends at Wikipedia, I now know the true meaning behind Labor day. Labor Day is an American federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 3 in 2012) that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.
Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. It also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, parades and athletic events.
Working at Bear Creek has transformed how I think about the ending of summer and this holiday. Aside from finalizing promotions for all of our upcoming fall festivals and events, in the marketing office, we have been in what I lovingly refer to as ‘Winter Mode” for the past two months. We are diligently getting things ready for the ski season; whether it be gathering new materials for our brochures and sending them to print, developing winter promotions and campaigns and deciding how and what advertising we will be working on. The end of summer, to me, means that we only have a few short months until the winter season.. it’s almost crunch time!
My plans yet to be determined but I’ll definitely take a moment to think about the contributions and achievements of our country’s workers this weekend. So my question is, how will you be celebrating this weekend? Whatever it may be, enjoy!
Disc golf has a large following in the Lehigh Valley, It seems as if there are DG courses almost around every corner. Bear Creek installed its first course last summer and received lots of positive feedback on the course, this spring Bear Creek decided to add another 18 holes to the previous course making two 18 courses.
Once both courses were open, it was amazing to see the amount of people that were coming out each day and playing the courses. Bear Creek started a Nine Hole Disc Golf Shoot out on Wednesday nights. The shoot-out is open to anybody, meet in Lot 4 and play 9 random holes, and the person with the lowest score is awarded a $25 gift card to the Grille. The first few weeks there was around 8-12 participants which was really good, but now we are seeing 24+ participants a week.
It appears that just because of WOM, more and more people are learning about the courses and trying them out. In just over two summers Bear Creek is becoming a destination for disc golfers. Bear Creek has now been added as the last stop of The Lehigh Valley Open Tournament. The Lehigh Valley open will take place on September 15 and 16. On day one Pros and Amateurs will play both Jordan Creek and Little Lehigh Parkway. At 6 all players are invited to an after party that will be hosted at Bear Creek. This will give players who never played our courses a chance to check them out. At 9AM all players will meet back up and play at Bear Creek as the final course of the weekend. After the completion of the course the top 4 pros will play a 9 hole course which will be followed by the awards ceremony.
Our courses are both less than two years old, Jordan Creek was established in 1992 and Little Lehigh Parkway in 2004. Being part of the Lehigh Valley Open with these two well established courses is a great accomplishment for the Bear Creek team who designed and built the courses. All of the hard work and development is finally paying off.
Hopefully these small steps will continue to help us grow in the the Disc Golf Destination or team is hoping for.

Are you a Triathlete? Then we have the perfect weekend for you. This weekend Bear Creek will be hosting two separate Triathlons. Saturday July 21 is our Bald Bear Triathlon, this Triathlon will begin with an early morning .25 mile swim in our large pond, and once you complete the swim you will transition into your riding gear and prepare for the 16.2 mile loop on some local rural roads. Don’t be fooled by the short distance, this course has long steep climbs that will leave you searching for the finish. But along with these steep climbs are long twisty down hills to help you get your breath back. Once you return to Bear Creek, you will be facing a 2.2 mile run on paved and gravel trails around the resort. Don’t be mistaken by the shorter distances, you will be relieved when you are finally finished.
If you are not into road cycling but really enjoy getting dirty on your mountain bike you should check out the Xterra Dirty Grizzly on Sunday, July 22. This Triathlon will begin with a .5 mile swim in our large pond, moving into the transition area to get ready for an incredible mountain bike ride. The mountain bike course is a 10 mile loop though Bear Creeks super technical, twisty single track. By the time you arrive back to the transition area, you will think that you can’t move on. But now it’s time to get ready for a 3.2 mile trail run throughout more of Bear Creek’s single track and gravel roads.

ATTENTION ALL CHEESE LOVERS!! Well, more like cheese enthusiasts. Coming, August 19 during our Cheese, Garlic & Summer Mountain Festival, the rolling of the cheese will take place at Bear Creek for a second year. You might be asking what is a cheese rolling? Lucky for you, I have an answer. Atop a hill, the cheese keeper will toss a wheel of cheese towards the bottom and competitors will race after it. The first competitor to catch the cheese and cross the finish line at the end of the hill will win the cheese. The rolling takes place on the bank above the big pond and WILL end in a splash. Unless you can be the lucky person who catches the cheese and doesn’t end up in the pond!
You also might be wondering, why on earth would I want to do something like this? Well, my only response to you is that it’s super cool. Check out a short video from last year’s rolling. The cheese rolling is the second video, remember that this was from last year’s event and that this year’s rolling is planned for August 19.

Now that I’ve talked you into it. Let me fill you in on the history of the cheese rolling. No, we didn’t invent the event. Cheese rolling has actually has been taking place for several years in Europe. (Leave it to the Europeans to come up with all of the fun activities: Cheese Rolling, Tough Guy etc.) The cheese rolling at Cooper’s Hill takes place each year in June. This year they celebrated the Diamond Jubilee Cheese Rolling in honor of the Queen. Check out their website, linked above. There are several video links and lots of info. Their event is pretty cool.

Are you enjoying your summer? It seems to be moving along way to fast. Maybe it is our jamb packed events calendar, maybe not. Last weekend we hosted the Canned Classic, and this week we started right back up with our weekly Dog Dayz of Summer and The Disc Golf Shootouts.
Thursday is going to be another busy day. The Grille is hosting an Oyster Night from 4:30 to 9:30PM. These delicious Malpeque Oysters are from the cold waters of Prince Edward Island, Canada and are only $1 each. Along with Buck-A-Shuck oysters there is also Live Outdoor Music by Jim Meck and Canned Beer Specials from $2 to $3.
