Everybody has something that they enjoy so much that they will sacrifice a good portion of their disposable income to experience it. For me, it’s going out to eat. I will travel long distances, cross state lines, and do endless research to find unique dining locations throughout our area. As this time of year approaches, I turn my attention to outdoor dining venues.
As my girlfriend Shannon will attest, my criteria for going out to eat is very strict. I refuse to fall into the chain restaurant trap. I also refuse to take her to an outdoor dining experience that is no more than putting tables on a sidewalk or parking lot and providing subpar food that can be found anywhere. I can say emphatically that the outdoor dining at Bear Creek is unlike anything else in the region. Full dinner service on the deck is accompanied by great live, local music. The setting is relaxing and the food delivers as well. Instead of sitting 10 feet from exhaust fumes and pedestrian traffic, you are in the middle of 330 acres of a beautiful resort that is tastefully lit. I can also say without hesitation, and much research, that you will not find another outdoor dining option that combines food quality and ambiance quite like this.
Beginning May 26th, Music Under the Stars returns to Bear Creek every Thursday through August 25th. This return brings back the area’s best outdoor dining and a great summer experience that I personally look forward to every year. Moms and Spring
The season seems right for the upcoming Mother’s Day. Moms always represent what we like most about the Spring. The sun is warm and inviting like mom, the birds are singing like mom, the leaves are emerging and the grass is growing, making nature spring to life, like mom has a way of doing whenever we tell her about what we are doing, or where we are going. Although we rarely recognize our Mothers, she is most often the biggest influence in our lives. Bear Creek has so many great ways to treat your mom well, like she deserves. The winter season is winding down and wedding season will soon be on its way. As we make our transition into the 2016 wedding season, many couples will start to look at venues and ceremony sites. The Lehigh Valley is a great place to start the adventure because it has much to offer. As a wedding assistant, I have gained great experience working for one of the best wedding facilities in the area. Bear Creek Mountain Resort is a wedding destination located in Macungie, PA that has everything you need for your special day.
I enjoy coming to work every day because of the resort’s architecture and views. It is truly a beautiful place to have a wedding. The resort is located on 300 acres which offers beautiful mountain views, rustic décor and an atmosphere of warmth and elegance. Besides the aesthetics, I also enjoy working with an outstanding banquet team and reputable coordinators that hold themselves to a high standard of service. It is very rewarding to give the bride and groom everything they want and need on their wedding day.

Although it has been a very abnormal winter, the spring season is always a time of refreshing. Breaking out the warm weather clothing and getting ready for the season of new beginnings is one of the better parts of life. The spring season brings back long anticipated events, like the annual Pond Skimming in the base area, happening on Sunday the 13th, or the always fun Spring Wine Festival, which is a 2 day festival that includes the best wines of Pennsylvania, food sampling and live jazz music on April 2-3. Spring is also a great time to celebrate with family. Our Easter and Mother’s Day Brunch Buffets are some of the best that you can find, and the spring scenery sure beats sitting on the couch at your Aunt and Uncles house watching PBS fundraisers. All this aside, Bear Creek still has great snow, the sun is out and a little warmer, but the snow is still cold, so catch it while you still can.

I recently had a MTO sandwich discussion and it got me thinking about our recent winter woes. What if we could have it our way? What would our ideal winter look like? To me, the ideal winter would involve 8-12 small winter storms, each with snow totals under 12” (2 storms could have higher snow totals to build the base), but not below 3”. I am not delusional about what we have here, so it would be wrong to ask for so much snow that we can’t move. Although, if I was still in school, my ideal snow totals would likely go way up.
El Nino, would certainly have nothing to do with my dream winter, unless of course it was providing some serious jet stream interference to push us some snow. I enjoy the autumn, with all of the great festivals like Oktoberfest and Harvest Wine Fest, so I would want my ideal winter to start around mid-November. I also enjoy the spring and summer, as I am a native to the beautiful 4 seasons of Pennsylvania, so going too far into April would probably not work for my dream winter. Just thinking of my ideal winter has totally made my gloomy, rain soaked reality seem not so very bad. So if this winter has given you the blues, then maybe you should come to The Spring Wine Festival and try some Reds and Whites, or visit the Spa and relax in one of our treatment rooms, or do what I do, embrace your MTO winter thoughts.
The best ski weekend of the year is fast approaching, as is great snowmaking weather. It should be an ideal holiday weekend to get outside and enjoy some of the best conditions of the year. The weather is looking frigid, so instead of sitting home in front of your fireplace to warm up, have a seat and warm up in front of ours after some skiing, boarding, or tubing. There is no better feeling than skiing or boarding, while enjoying great conditions, then kicking back in front of one of our large fireplaces. We have all of your warm up options covered, from enjoying winter sports to enjoying a great meal at the Grille.
The winter is flying by, and before you know it, spring will be knocking on the door. Looking for evidence, pitchers and catchers are reporting to spring training next week! This is a great time of year to get out and enjoy the winter while it lasts. If you are joining us this weekend, please make sure you are bundled up and take precautions before spending extended periods of time outdoors. Wait, what? Winter weather wallops with wonderful whiteout wildness! Bear Creek is finally receiving the stuff we all pray for. I am looking out my office window at the blizzard like conditions and can’t wait to boot up for the first time this season. I know, we have been open for more than two weeks, and conditions have been outstanding, but something about the fresh stuff, just makes it… what it is. Pure, wonderful, a magical, mystical, divine thing, that glorious frozen moisture from above. Thank you, heavens for dumping down on us your cold fluffy love. This is probably the fluffiest thing I have ever written, but I guess you can tell, I love this snow. I appreciate the mandatory exercise that comes with a big snowfall. It gets everyone off the couch and breathing in the cold air. Bear Creek seems to be in a great spot for this storm to hit us just perfect. We are already measuring over 15 inches deep and still piling up. Tomorrow should be an absolutely amazing day to hit the slopes, and I am predicting a lot of sick days Monday and Tuesday as well. This week ahead would be a great opportunity to take advantage of the great deals with a midweek ski and stay. I can’t wait to see all the likeminded snowboarders and skiers finally getting what they asked for. See you at the top of the mountain!
Winter is my favorite time of year, usually... Don’t get me wrong, I love this season no matter how the temps are but I live in Pennsylvania, not Louisiana, so hopefully the jet stream straightens out, the stars align and winter hits us hard. With January on the horizon and the weather pattern about to change and a baby on the way, I am very excited for the new year to start. As a lifelong snowboarder, and a PA native, I have always loved every part of the winter; snowball fights, shoveling, snowmen, building back yard jumps and rail set ups, base layers, fire places, hot chocolate, and chili. From sledding and snowshoeing and walking on ice, to lift rides and flat light and powder and ice. Winter, ahhh. I have been a Bear Creek employee since that first day, and even worked at Doe Mountain before that, so as far as wanting snow, well I think I want it more than anyone. Actually it is pretty cool that some of my good friends have also been at Bear Creek since the earliest days of existence. Anyway, now that winter is very past due, I hope the change will come in quickly. Our Snowmaking team is tired of waiting, the pumps are primed, the groomers are on standby, the sleds are still shiny, so please winter, come to Bear Creek tonight! Help us celebrate the new year, get cold, like you always do.
I remember it like it was yesterday. Every year beginning November 1st, I would start to feel the anticipation build. I would start getting my equipment ready, find all the lost winter items from the past season, and begin to watch the forecast on a daily basis. In those days, not too long ago, but before websites and social media, there was an 800 number that you could call to get all the updates regarding snowmaking. I would begin by checking that number once a week, and as the weather cooled, I would increase my efforts to 3 or 4 times a week, and eventually on a daily basis. The 800 number would tell all of us anxious winter enthusiasts how long we would have to wait for the upcoming season, as well as when our favorite trails would be opening. Needless to say, years like this had my patience tested, as I am sure you are feeling.
I have been lucky enough to work in this area that I love for the past 10 years. With this time in the industry, I have seen the operational efforts Bear Creek has made to get ready for the winter season. I wanted to share a few of these efforts and share some of the information I have learned regarding snowmaking.
Snowmaking is based upon the wet-bulb temperature at the resort. The wet-bulb temperature is a combination of ambient temperature (temperature you see on the weather forecast) and humidity. For example, if the ambient temperature is 32 degrees and humidity is 100%, the wet-bulb temperature is 32 degrees. If the ambient temperature is 32 degrees and the humidity level is 45%, then the wet-bulb is 26 degrees. We attempt to make snow at a wet-bulb temperature of 28 degrees or lower. Anything above a wet-bulb of 28 degrees creates a difficult environment for the water particles to freeze. Below is the wet-bulb temperature chart for reference.
Bear Creek has made numerous snowmaking upgrades over the past few years. The biggest change in snowmaking technology has been the automation of the snowmaking machines. Currently, 86 out of our 130 snow guns are automated. These 86 automated snow guns have on-board weather stations that communicate real-time data to the snow guns, and automatically adjust the water levels to the equipment to ensure the most efficient snowmaking possible. Other snow guns without this technology require the manual adjusting of the water levels, resulting in less than 100 percent efficiency.
Summer is finally here, and the weather is perfect for outdoor dining. Along with the great weather we are bringing back Lobster Week. That's right those colorful crustaceans from the Cape will once again be taking over the Grille Menu from June 16-21. Our Chef has planned out an entire week of lobster specials from lobster bisque, whole steamed lobsters, lobster rolls even a delicious lobster flambe. Even if you are not a fan of lobster, the Grille will still have you covered. We will continue to serve our regular dinner menu through out the event.
