The season started off a little later than we had wanted but Bear Creek made up for it with the great snowmaking and conditions throughout the entire season. There were incredible amount of snow made late March in to February. You can see the terrain change with the large piles of snow that had to be pushed out nightly.
Though I did not ride as much as I would have like this season, it was only 23 days compared to 46 I rode last year, the conditions were great everyday that I was out. There were numerous blue bird days and the snow was great almost every day.
This was a strange season, as spring approached the interest in Skiing and Snowboarding declined quickly. This was good as a day rider but as a resort this had to hurt. Most of the day you could ride any trail and see only a handful of guests despite the wonderful conditions.
This was an unusual ending to the season, I cannot remember the last time that Bear Creek closed with all trails open and fresh snow a few days before, but when the interest is not there, I can see why you would want to end it on a high note instead of dragging it out any longer. Like every other season, Bear Creek ended their season with a bang. On Saturday there was a cardboard box race with over 50 competitors, these competitors created racing machines from just cardboard, duct tape and zip ties. After the race there was live music on the deck by Local Dub. Sunday the season ended with a chilly day of Pond Skimming and live music by Trouble City All Stars. There were over 60 competitors who tried there hardest to skim over the chilly 100ft pond. The lucky competitors who made it were entered to win a season pass.
Though the season started off a bit late, it was still filled with great conditions and excellent weather for the majority of the season. With 76 available days of skiing and riding, there was no reason why you should not have enjoyed these great conditions and fresh man-made snow.
It is that time of year again where the season begins to dwindle away. The days are becoming warmer and guests begin to participate in other spring sports. But it is not the end, there is still a ton of snow and our snowmakers made snow the past three nights to ensure the best possible conditions for our guests.
There is still plenty of things to look forward too, including our Spring Fling Weekend. On March 16 we will start the festivities off with our Cardboard Box race. Participants have to create a Cardboard box racer only using cardboard, duct tape, zip ties and paint. This may seem impossible, but the creations that show up and perform are absolutely impressive. The sleds race in a elimination format until the fasted sled prevails. Think you got what it takes, then maybe you will win one of the prizes for fastest or most creative sled.
We end the Spring Fling Weekend on March 17 with our Annual Pondskimming. This is one of the best places to celebrate St. Pattys Day. Grab a cold beer and watch all of the crazy skiers and snowboarders try to skim across our icy cold pond. The lucky skimmers that make it across will be entered to win a season pass. But the majority of the skimmers will end up swimming. This is a great event to watch but even more fun to participate in.
Tracy told you about our Lift Of Love event in her last blog post, here. Well I’m happy to tell you that the event had a great turnout and proved to be another successful matchmaking night at Bear Creek. I thought that I would share a few photos from the night.

We were fortunate to be mentioned on the Lehigh Valley InSite over this weekend. Their 10-year-old blogger, Abigail, recaps her snowtubing experience at Bear Creek. Check out this excerpt:
This past Sunday (Super Bowl Sunday to be exact), I had the opportunity to pass the hours leading up to the big game by taking my sister-in-law’s family and ours to Bear Creek Mountain Resort & Conference Center for a fun morning of snow tubing. It’s not often I find myself on a mountain in frigid temperatures at 8:30 a.m., but the things you do for your child, niece and nephew... Read Abigail's complete post on the Lehigh Valley Insite page.
See you on the slopes!
Conditions are great and our snowmaking team has been hard at work almost every night. Today the Cascade Park was shut down so that BCironworks can finally have a proper park build. They have been out all day, but I have not seen any leaks of what they are setting up, but you will not be disappointed. Word on the street is that Black Bear will be getting a full build on Thursday, leaving us with two new park set-ups this week.
This gives you with a great opportunity to get out there and start getting ready for the Big Air competition on February 9. The event has been capped at 100 competitors so make sure you don’t wait too long to register, registration is from 9:30-11AM in the Guest Services Lobby.
The participation fee is only $15 and you have the chance to win prizes from Buckmans and Rockstar. The top three competitors in each category will be rewarded prizes.
With a little under the week till the Big Air, it’s time to get out there and enjoy the great conditions and get some practice in before the big event. Don’t think you are up to competing? You can still enjoy the great conditions and check out all of the incredible tricks from the sidelines.
Every month we try to come up with new ideas to have fun in the snow and to give our resort guests an experience that they can have for the rest of their lives. Last year my fun new idea came from a ski resort out west that did a ski date afternoon. Singles were paired up with a partner for an hour of skiing to see if they hit it off. We decided to take that thought a little bit further and came up with Lift of Love; Ski Dating. With speed dating still so popular we thought that putting a speed date into the time it takes to ride a ski lift to the top of the mountain as the perfect way to find your soul mate.
Since we are all avid skier or boarders here it is important to us that a friend shares that passion. We found out that our guests felt the same way. You want to know that the person you spend time with and maybe even raise children with has the same values as you do…quality time on the mountain every winter!!!! I know that when I was dating one of my first questions was “Do you ski” and when I found the man that did, we got married and honeymooned at Park City. I digress into my happy married life, but the Lift of Love is about finding a special someone for all our single friends on the slopes.
So how does the Lift of Love work? Is it just a bunch of punks out for a joke? The Lift of Love is a very serious (but fun event), all of our ski daters last year were truly out to find the love of their lives. So with much care we created a line for boys and a line for girls and sent up willing participants to have seven minutes to get to know one another and see if they wanted to take a few runs together or if they wanted to come back to the Lift of Love and try again.
The Lift of Love runs on the “A” lift and is exclusive to ski daters for the night. Only Lift of Love participants are allowed on this lift on Valentines’ night. We are even offering a Lift of Love Lift ticket for just $14 that is available on Thursday, February 14 from 6:00-10:00PM. Lift of Love participants sign up for the fun at Guest Services and will be entered in a drawing to win a free overnight stay in the hotel, too!
2012 was the first year that we offered the Lift of Love and the press loved the unique event. We had national news coverage from Alaska to Philadelphia and blog mentions from Swany Gloves to local realtors. We hope to make 2013 even bigger and better, and we hope that you will find your dream partner on the Lift of Love.
