A Look Back…

In the late 1800s, this area was home to the Rittenhouse Gap mines, part of the Mid-Atlantic Iron Belt. For decades, the mines powered industry and innovation, even drawing the attention of Thomas Edison, who created a more cost-effective way to extract iron ore from crushed rock. Built in the 1850s, the Catasauqua-Fogelsville Railroad transported iron ore along the Lehigh River, including to the Lock Ridge Furnace in Alburtis, where the ore was used to make cannons and machinery. The Rittenhouse Gap mines were abandoned after World War I when the iron industry was drawn to the upper Midwest.

In 1967, Doe Mountain Ski Area was the first ski resort to open its doors in the area, offering a modest t-bar, rope tow, and two trails. Over the years, the facility has grown, expanding to 23 trails with seven lifts. In 1999, Doe Mountain changed ownership. Today, it is a year-round resort, welcoming guests for adventures and celebrations in the mountains.
