QUESTION: California produces more than 250 million pounds of garlic each year. One farm in Monterey County (near Gilroy "The Garlic Capital of the World") plants 2,000 acres of garlic and produces almost 25 million pounds annually, yet this is only 3% of the worlds’ Garlic. True or False?

A Weekend of Competitions!

Written by

Are you a Triathlete? Then we have the perfect weekend for you. This weekend Bear Creek will be hosting two separate Triathlons. Saturday July 21 is our Bald Bear Triathlon, this Triathlon will begin with an early morning .25 mile swim in our large pond, and once you complete the swim you will transition into your riding gear and prepare for the 16.2 mile loop on some local rural roads. Don’t be fooled by the short distance, this course has long steep climbs that will leave you searching for the finish. But along with these steep climbs are long twisty down hills to help you get your breath back. Once you return to Bear Creek, you will be facing a 2.2 mile run on paved and gravel trails around the resort.  Don’t be mistaken by the shorter distances, you will be relieved when you are finally finished.

If you are not into road cycling but really enjoy getting dirty on your mountain bike you should check out the Xterra Dirty Grizzly on Sunday, July 22. This Triathlon will begin with a .5 mile swim in our large pond, moving into the transition area to get ready for an incredible mountain bike ride.  The mountain bike course is a 10 mile loop though Bear Creeks super technical, twisty single track. By the time you arrive back to the transition area, you will think that you can’t move on. But now it’s time to get ready for a 3.2 mile trail run throughout more of Bear Creek’s single track and gravel roads.

Do you think you have what it takes to compete? If not come out as a spectator, and begin planning your training for next year’s triathlons.

As The Cheese Rolls...

Written by

ATTENTION ALL CHEESE LOVERS!! Well, more like cheese enthusiasts. Coming, August 19 during our Cheese, Garlic & Summer Mountain Festival, the rolling of the cheese will take place at Bear Creek for a second year. You might be asking what is a cheese rolling? Lucky for you, I have an answer. Atop a hill, the cheese keeper will toss a wheel of cheese towards the bottom and competitors will race after it. The first competitor to catch the cheese and cross the finish line at the end of the hill will win the cheese. The rolling takes place on the bank above the big pond and WILL end in a splash. Unless you can be the lucky person who catches the cheese and doesn’t end up in the pond!

You also might be wondering, why on earth would I want to do something like this? Well, my only response to you is that it’s super cool. Check out a short video from last year’s rolling.  The cheese rolling is the second video, remember that this was from last year’s event and that this year’s rolling is planned for August 19.

Cheese Rolling

Still interested?Anyone who is 18 or older may participate. To race, you must purchase a ticket to the Cheese, Garlic & Summer Mountain Festival. They are only $8 per person. All contestants will have to sign a liability release. Tickets can be purchased on the day of the event at the resort or online at

Now that I’ve talked you into it. Let me fill you in on the history of the cheese rolling. No, we didn’t invent the event. Cheese rolling has actually has been taking place for several years in Europe. (Leave it to the Europeans to come up with all of the fun activities: Cheese Rolling, Tough Guy etc.) The cheese rolling at Cooper’s Hill takes place each year in June. This year they celebrated the Diamond Jubilee Cheese Rolling in honor of the Queen.  Check out their website, linked above. There are several video links and lots of info. Their event is pretty cool.

Have a great Monday!

CANned Beer Classic

Written by

Summer is in full swing and the Fourth of July is upon us! I don’t know about you but the Independence Day holiday reminds me of the good old US of A, backyard barbecues, beer and games. Our special events team decided to capture the spirit of summer and host the CANned Beer Classic.

CANned Beer Festival

The event is THIS SUNDAY, July 8 at the resort and is FREE admission! Sorry, those of you who are under the age of 21 are not permitted at this event. From 12-5, guests can enjoy a few cold ones, some great bbq food, live music and fun backyard games.  (All beverages should be enjoyed responsibly of course!) All in our backyard, the biggest yard around!

I know, I know, you are probably thinking.. canned beer?!?! That’s right canned beer is making a comeback and has quickly become the packaging vessel of choice amongst some of the most popular microbreweries. Guests will pick and choose which canned brews that they would like to enjoy and pay for them along the way. Check out our beer selection here. No upfront costs are involved. The best part is that the first 500 guests will receive a FREE Bear Creek koozie!

If this event couldn’t get any better just read this: We are hosting an array of backyard games that we are lovingly referring to as the deCANthalon! Guests will create teams and compete in games like beanbag toss, horseshoes, quoits and much more. The winners will receive these super cool trophies:

What are you waiting for? Grab your SPF, your lawn chair and your friends and check out the CANned beer classic this weekend!

Summer is here!

Written by

Spring is here and summer is just around the corner.  Mud season is over and the resort is in full bloom.  The roses are stunning, the trees are lush and the wildlife is humming. I am so happy to come to work in the morning, turning into our driveway and coming over the crest of the hill to get the panoramic view of the pond, hills, trails, every day it still strikes me as beautiful.  As an Event Planner at Bear Creek it is my job to develop a fun and exciting atmosphere, to create a vibe of excitement and to bring energy to our resort.  This summer we have a full schedule of activities designed to bring the community into our resort and to make us a much sought out destination!  I hope that you will come and join us this summer to see what all the fun is about.

Every Tuesday we are working with Cold Nose Lodge for Dog Dayz of Summer.  Bring you pup and take a hike in our base area and afterward take a break in our rockgarden.  Muttinis for the humans and treat samples for the dogs!

Outdoor dining on our multi-tiered deck has begun, and will continue all summer.  A FREE community concert series will be held the 4th Thursday of every month as well as outdoor movies, check out the events page for all the details.

Summer Festivals begin in July with the CANned Classic, an introduction to craft beer in a can with a salute to the good old American backyard games on July 8, and the return of the Cheese and Garlic Summer Mountain Festival on August 19th.  Can you say Cheese Roll?

With so much to do and so much to offer be sure to make your summer plans to include a day at Bear Creek!
