Since the start the plan was to have two full 18 hole courses at the resort. Last year we finished the first 18 but ran out of time before the busy winter season to finish the second 18. Since the winter season ended earlier than expected this year, this gave our Mountain Operations team a head start on the new course. There was a lot of planning involved but they just could not come up with a location for another full 18 hole course. This is when they decided to split the current course and add new holes to form two separate 18 hole courses.
The First of the 18 hole courses begins in parking lot 4, throwing uphill adjacent the driveway. This course includes 9 completely new holes and the old holes 1-9, which are now 10-18. The new nine holes are shorter than some of our former holes yet still technical. The longest of the nine is 444ft while the other 8 are in the 200-250ft range. This 18 hole course is a great warm up game before starting out on the other 18 hole course which will consist of old holes 10-18 and 9 newer holes.
The Second course is still being built but should be completed in the next few weeks. This course will include previous holes 10-18 which zigzagged throughout the ski trails and had drastic elevations changes, uphill and short downhill drives. The added nine will include some of the same elevation changes along with challenging wooded and open holes. Don’t be fooled this course is very technical and you will be relieved when you reach hole 18.
With the additions to the courses, we now believe that we have something for every type of player. If you are looking for a quick game then the first 18 are great, but if you are looking for a more challenging course then the second 18 is what you should check out. So when you get the chance stop by and play a few rounds.

Over the past few days, we’ve had the opportunity to recover and reflect on this past weekend’s first, two-day Wine & Food Festival. If you were already familiar with our Wine Festivals, we changed it up a bit this year. Our events team worked hard to extend the tasting from what was traditionally a one-day, five-hour festival to a weekend filled with activities. We are happy to report that in the end, both guests and vendors seemed pleased with the weekends’ events. In addition to the one day Fall Wine Festival, planned for October 21, we have already reserved the dates for another two-day spring Wine & Food Festival next April. Anyway, my post today is to share a little bit of the behind the scenes work. At Bear Creek, we have an All Hands On Deck philosophy. This means that every department from our housekeeping team to our management team get together to help make the event successful. As a guest, you might never know that the attendant that retrieved your wine from wine check was actually our resort general manager. Or, how about that helpful team member who got a new wine glass for you when yours fell on the floor in the tasting room? She was actually our hotel manager.
In my opinion, one of the best things about working here is the supportive environment and team. It’s refreshing to see how everyone works together for the greater good, the guest. The special events department begins planning each event several months in advance. From the start, we hold planning and operational meetings to make sure all areas of the resort have an opportunity to be involved. Each event is carefully planned and executed ensuring that a superior guest experience is top priority.
In addition to this, we love hosting events! As a marketing person, I don’t often have a chance to speak with our guests one-on-one. I enjoy speaking with different people, asking them what they liked or disliked about the event and more importantly why they chose Bear Creek?

It is less than one week until the Bear Creek Spring Wine and Food Festival. In the past, our wine events have been such a success that we have decided to expand from a one day event to a full weekend of fun. As a past guest, this year I have had so much fun planning the event. Pennsylvania winery owners are a fantastic group who have extreme passion for their work. Listening to them, you can’t help but want to share in their joy for winemaking. This year in the spirit of these wineries we have created the Crystal Cup Award for Best Winery.
Guests of the event will select their favorite winery as they make their tasting rounds on Saturday. If you are planning to attend, I ask that you listen to the winery staff and take note of the enthusiasm and joy in sharing their products, you will be astonished at how much you learn. Don’t forget to ask questions and sip to taste the subtle notes of fruit. Be sure to note what you like, unfortunately you can only vote for one winery, but your votes will count!
New this year we have added a four-course wine dinner on Friday night in the Mountain Ballroom. Friday evening’s wine theme is a bit different: Italy vs. France. While we were researching various wine websites and courses, I noticed that a lot of the Old Word ancient wine regions had to step up their games because of the fierce competition with the New World wines. Since all of our tastings on Saturday and Sunday are from wonderful Pennsylvania, we thought, why not feature some of the famous wine regions in a head to head taste test? That is how we came up with our wine dinner theme; Italy vs. France in a region-by-region taste test. We sat down with our wine expert and decided to pick these regions: Loiren Valley vs. Marche, Burgundy vs. Piedmote, Rhone Valley vs. Mocato and of course Sparkling French vs. Prosecco. What a fun way to taste eight interesting wines and decide which country has the best wines! No matter which one comes out on top, the clear winner is … you!
Also new this year, we will have wine and food related seminars all day. Meet Professor Ronald Kapon, who wrote the New York Times Knowledge Network wine course, his seminar; Confessions of a Non-Wine Snob, this is sure to be a hoot! Or spend time learning about the Health Benefits of Wine with Joe Greff, owner of Blue Mountain Vineyards & Cellars and winemaker with a degree in Microbiology. Plus you won’t want to miss food demonstrations by Clover Creek Cheese Cellar and the Chefs of Bear Creek as well as seminars on the art of Wine Glasses by Peter Yenawine and how to set an elegant table by MyTableware.com. This week I had the opportunity to go to a Ste Michelle wine tasting at Sbraga in Philly. Kevin Sbraga, the season 7 winner of Top Chef, opened this wonderful little restaurant about 4 months ago, and they played host to the event. As an event planner here at Bear Creek we are also working on our own wine dinner that will be held on April 13th the night before our Spring Wine & Food Festival. So I wanted to experience what an established wine company did for their event.
I had not been to Sbraga before so I was excited to try his cooking. Our Executive Chef, Michael Greenstein, accompanied me on this outing and when we arrived we staked out some prime seats at the counter over looking the display kitchen. The restaurant is small, it seats just 65, but it is on a prime corner of Broad Street and is full of light and has a beautiful interior. The first course was a seafood dish and the broth was just divine, course two was rabbit served on bread pudding with lentils, dates and Brussels sprouts. I have to admit I would never order this and I have never had rabbit, but in Chef Sbraga’s hands it was a wonderful juxtaposition of flavors with the juicy meat, the dense bread pudding and the savory lentils peppered with sweet dates, this is one dish I will go back for! The rest of the courses were just as lovely and we had a chance to really taste the west coast wines both by themselves and paired with foods. What a wonderful way to spend a day getting to try new and wonderful dished and wines!
